Backup and Restore Procedure
Backup and Restore Procedure
CS Users home directories resides on Netapp FAS2552 Storage System which is protected with RAID5 against hardware failure of one disk in a RAID group.
The Storage System is fully redundant and it is supposed to work without down time at all, unless 2 same elements fail at the same time.
The home directories storage is backed up by the Computer Center backup services.
The CS Users extension directories resides on Netapp FAS2552 Storage System which is protected with RAID5 against hardware failure of one disk in a RAID group. This storage is an extension to the account home directory.
The extension directories are NOT backed up by the Computer Center backup service. The extension directories have the snapshot service.
Snapshot service is working on Netapp FAS2552 Storage System, so if data is deleted or altered, it can be restored from a snapshot, by the user.
Please note, the data on the extension directory is NOT backed up as the storage of the Home Directory, in the CC backup service.
We are using the Technion Backup Services: http://backup.technion.ac.il for CS users Home directories, Mail inboxes, System stuff.
The backup is performed every night and during weekends.
Users can restore files from a specific date, up to 6 months back.
For a more detailed backup policy please look in: http://tcc.technion.ac.il/index.php?page_name=unix_bac_policy
Please note Disk space of local (office) computers are not under backup.
Since the backup is done via unix file server, there is a difficulty to see Hebrew file names.
To restore a file one can open a request in CS helpdesk: http://helpdesk.cs.technion.ac.il/ then a CS system staff member opens a request in CC helpdesk: http://helpdesk.technion.ac.il/
One can open a request directly in CC helpdesk.
The needed info is:
- Server name – CSA or CSM
- Full path of the required file – starting /home_sg/login-name or /home_ta/login-name
- Date you know the file was existing.
